Fifa has handed long bans to three Kenyan officials from taking part in any football related activity because of bribery.
Former General Secretary of the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) Daniel Omino and former chairman of the Kenya Football Referees Association (KFRA) Wycliffe Ogutu were banned for five years each.
Samson Kawa, former KFRA treasurer, was handed a two-year ban after Fifa’s Ethics Committee ruled that the three officials demanded bribes before selecting Kenya’s list of international referees last year.
“Fifa investigation has determined that the KFF had summoned an unusually large number of candidates to the annual selection process for nominees to the Fifa International List of Referees,” a Fifa statement said.
“Against Fifa policy, referees were required them to pay in order to participate.
“The Ethics Committee reviewed the facts of the case and subsequently found each of the former Kenyan officials guilty of infringing Fifa Code of Ethics thus resulting in the sanctions.”
Alfred Ndinya, the most senior listed Fifa referee from Kenya, was warned about his future conduct.
The accusations of graft were reported to Fifa in November last year by KFRA secretary-general G.M.T. Ottieno.
Ottieno, a retired Fifa referee, said referees wanting to appear on a list of candidates to be submitted by KFF to the world football body were asked to pay for their place.
