Beauty Queens inspire empowerment in TZ

MISS World 2025, Suchata Chuangsri, and Miss World Africa, Hasset Dereje, have visited Tanzania to motivate the empowerment of vulnerable girls.

Specifically, the duo paid a visit to the Mama Jasiri Project in Mwananyamala, Dar es Salaam. The extraordinary grassroots initiative champions the empowerment of young women through skills development in traditional handwoven sisal crafts.

The visit marked a significant milestone for Safe Haven Foundation and the Mama Jasiri Project, which currently supports 15 girls from vulnerable backgrounds by providing training, mentorship, and access to sustainable economic opportunities.

During their inspiring tour, the beauty queens engaged warmly with the young women, actively participating in a live demonstration of sisal weaving. Both Chuangsri and Dereje shared heartfelt words of encouragement, uplifting the spirits of the budding artisans.

“What you are doing here is beyond beautiful,” expressed Chuangsri from Thailand. “You are weaving more than just products — you are weaving hope and a future for generations to come.”

Echoing this sentiment, Dereje from Ethiopia stated, “Africa’s strength lies in its women. Seeing projects like Mama Jasiri gives us hope and confidence that a better, self-sufficient continent is possible.”

The queen’s visit also aimed to promote cultural exchange, tourism, and Tanzania’s rich heritage.

Dr Khadijah Hassan, Chief Executive Officer of Safe Haven Foundation, expressed deep gratitude for the international spotlight on the project: “Today, we witnessed a powerful celebration of global sisterhood and solidarity. These queens have not only inspired our girls but amplified our mission worldwide.”

The Mama Jasiri Project, poised to expand its reach from 15 to 25 beneficiaries, embodies Safe Haven Foundation’s broader commitment to uplifting women and youth through innovative social programs.

“Yesterday’s visit not only motivated the girls but also showcased the transformative power of grassroots initiatives on a global stage,” Dr Hassan added.

As Miss World and Miss Africa departed, the girls of Mama Jasiri bid them farewell with handcrafted gifts — a heartfelt symbol of appreciation, pride, and warm Tanzanian hospitality.

I have been involved with sports in Tanzania as a Volleyball Coach for many years—and was a Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) leader. I studied sports management at Leipzig University in Germany and understand the science behind sports. That led me to work as a football pundit, with the BBC ( Swahili service) in London. That experience and exposure took me to covering the 2010, World Cup in South Africa. This provided me with a great insight into international level football commentary and the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the game including its players, the stadiums, the rules and tactics.I have also been grateful to meet a wide range of people connected to football in the UK, Tanzania, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, France, Kenya etc, and visited almost all of the key football stadiums across United Kingdom, and Europe.
