AIBA bans Tanzania indefinitely

The Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) has been suspended indefinitely by the world governing body, the Amateur International Boxing Associations (AIBA).

Former BFT vice president Chris Muta said yesterday that the body was banned following a drug trafficking charge facing some of the body’s officials and boxers.

Muta appealed to National Sports Council (NSC) to appoint in interim committee which would lead the body for two years to replace the executive committee which resigned recently because of the same allegations.

He said that the body had already informed top sports organs such as Tanzania Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports about the ban.

“The interim committee will work hard to lift the ban or else we may be banned for five years,“ Muta said.
BFT president Shaaban Mintanga is facing drug trafficking charges.

Mintanga is charged that on June 3, this year, at unknown place, the accused with others not in court, conspired to traffic narcotic drugs weighing 4.8kg from Tanzania to Mauritius.

In the second count, it was alleged that on June 10, this year, the accused did traffic the said drugs to Mauritius.

Boxer Patrick Emillian and coach Nasoro Michael are held in Mauritius on the same allegations.

I have been involved with sports in Tanzania as a Volleyball Coach for many years—and was a Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) leader. I studied sports management at Leipzig University in Germany and understand the science behind sports. That led me to work as a football pundit, with the BBC ( Swahili service) in London. That experience and exposure took me to covering the 2010, World Cup in South Africa. This provided me with a great insight into international level football commentary and the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the game including its players, the stadiums, the rules and tactics.I have also been grateful to meet a wide range of people connected to football in the UK, Tanzania, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, France, Kenya etc, and visited almost all of the key football stadiums across United Kingdom, and Europe.
