Ngorongoro Heroes advanced into the next stage of the African under 20 qualifiers after trouncing Malawi by 3-1 goals in the return leg match played at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, yesterday.
The hosts advanced on 4-3 goals aggregates having drawn 2-2 in the first leg match played at the Kamuzu Banda Stadium in Blantyre, a fortnight ago.
The victory has enabled the team to set up a clash against Cote d’Ivoire before qualifying for the finals to be held in Libya next year.
The home side opened the score through Thomas Ulimwengu who headed home a beautiful cross by Mbwana Samata barely two minutes after the kick off.
While Malawi were plotting to find an equaliser, Omega Seme broke their hearts with a power-packed shot in the 34th minute off Salim Telela’s pass.
Mbwana Samata threw overboard another glorious opportunity on the brink if half time mark when his shot sailed over the cross bar.
Malawi were tough to beat as they fought gallantly with Lastin Simkonda earning his side a last gasp penalty for the consolation goal.
The home side restored their two goals cushion when Thomas Mwakipesile was on target deep into stoppage time courtesy of Issa Rashid’s cross.
Ngorongoro Heroes or formerly Serengeti Boys are back into the continental championship after three years ban imposed by CAF following an overage scandal that wrecked the team.
Meanwhile, the senior national soccer team, Taifa Stars meet Rwanda in the first leg tie of the second edition of CHAN qualifiers to be played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam today.
Rwanda were expected to arrive by yesterday ahead of today’s clash.
The return leg will be played on June 5 in Kigali, a tie that would decide the team to advance into the CHAN berth in Sudan.
