Transfers – Gossip Shop: Lennon to Liverpool

Paul McCartney may have played an obscenely profitable gig at Anfield this summer, but the most talented (still alive) Beatle has always been an Everton fan at heart.

2007-2008 Tottenham-Sunderland Aaron Lennon - 0

So how will Macca react if Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon is delivered to the red half of Merseyside in January, as reported by the ever-reliable Daily Mirror?

Britney, who works in Gossip Shop’s Toxteth branch, has it on good authority that McCartney abhors anybody bearing the surname Lennon – apparently it has something to do with an old work colleague who is credited with all the best bits from his career.

All of which could lead to complications if Aaron brings his wingmanship to the city next season in the colours of Liverpool . A GS source has told us that Celtic‘s Neil Lennon contemplated a similar move last season, but was warned by McCartney’s people that his arrival would not be greeted warmly.

If Lennon does arrive, Jermaine Pennant could move in the opposite direction – but GS cannot see Harry Redknapp putting up with his flippant ways for long.

Next up, the news that Gary O’Neil is contemplating a return to Portsmouth from Middlesbrough following Lassana Diarra‘s reported £24 million move to Real Madrid.

A £5m pricetag has been discussed, with Gareth Southgate considering putting some of the cash towards Crystal Palace midfielder Ben Watson – a snip at just £1.5m.

But hold on a dog-gone minute! According to The Sun, Diarra’s move to Madrid could yet be foiled by some impressive gazumping from Manchester City.

Mark Hughes’s bulging pockets are weighed down with cash and as Robinho will testify, cash can prove a defining influence in one’s decision.

Another man being linked to Middle Eastlands is Fabio Grosso. The Italian World Cup winner, who plies his trade for Lyon, has moved swiftly to deny such rumours, but GS – like Oasis – says ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’.

Over at Chelsea Towers, ears have been pricked by the news that Valencia’s Miguel “might be available” and rather fancies a spell picking up stupid amounts of money in the Premier League. And who wouldn’t?

This one may have some substance to it, however, when you consider that Luiz Felipe Scolari managed the midfielder during his time with the Portuguese national side.

Having said that, GS once shook hands with Gordon Banks – and as far as we can tell the Pele-thwarting stopper has no intention of working behind our counter.

Back to good ol’ Harry at Spurs, and the suggestion that Anthony Annan could be on his way to White Hart Lane from Rosenberg.

The Ghana international, an “ace” according to The Sun, would cost around £4m and fit the Redknapp brand perfectly with his swashbucking midfield style.

Finally, GS is obliged to write these three words. Ronaldo. Real. Madrid. Do with them what you will, but be assured they will punctuate every waking hour of your life in 2009.

Damn you Ronaldo, and your persistent flirtations. Get a room already.
