Four Tanzanian athletes who are earmarked to represent the country in this year’s edition of Birmingham Marathon are setting up a camp in Dar es Salaam to gear up for the show.
The assistant secretary of the Athletics Tanzania (AT), Julius Msomi, said the four athletes will be under tutelage of Cuban coaches Edres Edwardo Baro and Jorge Luis Bravo Rojas.
The four – Damian Chopa, Shamba Grilimi, Marko Joseph and Fabian Joseph – are expected to board a Birmingham-bound flight via London on October 9, just two days ahead of the event that also has attracted competent athletes from all over the world.
However, Msomi said the athletes would train on off the camp basis due to inability of AT to set a joint residential camp.
The athletes are also supposed to cater for their own accommodation while in Dar es Salaam up to the moment they board the flight to the United Kingdom.
Msomi said while the four athletes are fully sponsored by the International Association of Amateur Federations, IAAF, AT is searching for funds to send one of the coaches to accompany the Tanzanian team.
AT has for several times come under public criticism for poor show of its athletes whenever they compete at international events, Berlin Olympics and the World championships are just some of the major events that produced lackluster performance.
