Premier League set to redistribute Portsmouth’s TV cash

Portsmouth

The Premier League is set to use Portsmouth’s share of the latest television monies to pay off the club’s debts to other top-flight sides.

Chelsea, Tottenham and Watford are all owed money by Pompey and the Premier League will split £7m between them.

The action is allowed within league rules to protect clubs who are owed money from transfers.

Meanwhile, the League has not yet given approval for Jamie O’Hara to renew his loan deal from Tottenham.

The 23-year-old moved to Fratton Park in August on a six-month deal, with an option to extend for the rest of the season.

However, the club are still governed by a registration embargo banning them from making any new signings and proposed new loan deals such as O’Hara’s have to be signed off by the Premier League board – and they have not done so yet.

A Premier League spokesman said: “The clubs may have agreed a deal in principle but it is up to the Premier League board to decide whether there can be a continuation.”

However, Pompey’s non-playing staff were paid their December wages on Monday and the players are expected to finally be paid on Tuesday after the club’s owners secured a short-term bank loan.

A club spokesman told Press Association Sport: “The staff have been paid today but there are two separate payrolls and we are still expecting the players to be paid on Tuesday.”

The crisis does not look like easing in the longer term and fans are planning further protests against owner Ali Al Faraj.

The Professional Footballers’ Association is keeping a close watch on the situation and will send a representative to meet players on Tuesday.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor said: “We will find out tomorrow whether in fact the players have been paid and then decide on any strategy for the future.

“We have become used to any number of financial problems at various clubs but you do not expect it at the top level.

“It is certainly not good for the image of the game or the Premier League, and it’s a timely warning that football needs to keep a sense of financial propriety.”

Meanwhile, the Premier League has confirmed that Pompey midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng cannot play for another club this season.

Fifa rules allow players to play for only two clubs in a season and the former Germany Under-21 international has featured for Spurs and Pompey this term.

The 22-year-old Ghana hopeful had been linked with Blackburn.
