McCarthy has been axed from the squad after a miserable stint at West Ham: he has made just 11 appearances and not scored a single goal for the Hammers since joining them from Blackburn on transfer deadline day last year.
But the Daily Mirror reports that the South African striker is insisting on sitting back and scooping his £50,000-a-week salary rather than take the seven-figure bonus to go and find employment elsewhere.
McCarthy’s contract runs until June 2012, meaning he will trouser just under £4 million from the East London club if he sees out his deal.
Cesc Fabregas‘s nice-guy image is on the rocks after allegations that he accused Everton of bribing the match officials during Arsenal’s match on Tuesday night, according to the Daily Express and Daily Mirror.
Fabregas has already been cleared by the FA after referee Lee Mason made no comment about the tunnel incident in his official match report.
David Moyes had fumed that Fabregas should have been sent off for his comments, which the Mirror claims included shouting “how much are they paying you?” at the referee, and branding the Toffees a “team full of cheats”.
Fabregas has put out a statement defending himself despite already being told no action will be taken, but given that the accusations included bribery and cheating there might be a bit more life in this one before the fuss dies down.
Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton has settled his long-running compensation claim with the FA, according to The Sun.
The 27-year-old was forced to retire in 2009 after failing to recover from an ankle problem originally sustained while on international duty with England back in 2006. The Hammers have yet to settle with the FA over the injury to their man – which was caused by a Shaun Wright-Phillips tackle in training – and are determined to sue for over £10 million.
And finally, Tottenham’s Ledley King has missed a hernia operation – because he mislaid his passport.
The Mirror reports that the defender, who is so injury prone you’d think his joints were hand-made in lead crystal, had been due to fly to Germany for surgery by a specialist. The op will now take place next week.
