Premier League – Hodgson appointed West Brom boss

Roy Hodgson has been appointed head coach of Premier League strugglers West Bromwich Albion after signing a contract until summer 2012.

Hodgson takes over a side that have slipped into relegation trouble and sacked Roberto Di Matteo last Sunday.

The 63-year-old left Liverpool last month after an unhappily short tenure – he is the current Premier League manager of the year after leading Fulham to the Europa League final last season.

A club statement said caretaker boss Michael Appleton would stay in charge for Saturday’s crucial game against West Ham, assisted by Keith Downing and Dean Kiely.

West Brom are just one place outside the relegation zone in 17th spot, two points above bottom club West Ham.

The club had a good start to the season under Di Matteo following their promotion from the Championship last term.

However a run of 13 defeats in 18 matches in all competitions resulted in the Italian being relieved of his duties.
