The Football Association has asked Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and his assistant Carlos Queiroz to explain comments they made after Saturday’s 1-0 FA Cup defeat by Portsmouth.

In a television interview, Ferguson, who was angry that a penalty had not been awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo, said referee Martin Atkinson had been “on Portsmouth‘s side”.
He also accused referees chief Keith Hackett of “not doing his job properly”.
Queiroz described Atkinson as a “robber” in newspaper reports.
The FA said that it had written to both for explanations and that they had until next Wednesday to respond.
Queiroz has already apologised to Birmingham City‘s Martin Taylor after remarks he made in reference to Taylor’s leg-breaking tackle on Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva.
