Premier League – Community Shield: team news

Eurosport

Champions Manchester United head into the new season’s curtain raiser against FA Cup holders Portsmouth with a heavily depleted side.

2007-2008 Manchester United Gary Neville - 0

Cristiano Ronaldo (ankle), Owen Hargreaves, Ben Foster, Louis Saha and Park Ji-sung (all knee) are sidelined for the showpiece match at Wembley.

But club captain Gary Neville (pictured) is set to return to the side for just his second competitive appearance since sustaining an ankle injury in March 2007.

Pompey could be without Lassana Diarra (ankle) and Sean Davis (hip).

New signing Glen Little is also trying to shake off a thigh injury and on-loan Chelsea player Ben Sahar is set to be a substitute, meaning Portsmouth’s team is unlikely to show many changes to the one which won the FA Cup in May.

Midfielder Sulley Muntari has left for Internazionale so will be missing, while new signing Peter Crouch is set to feature in attack alongside Jermain Defoe, with Kanu on the bench.

I have been involved with sports in Tanzania as a Volleyball Coach for many years—and was a Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) leader. I studied sports management at Leipzig University in Germany and understand the science behind sports. That led me to work as a football pundit, with the BBC ( Swahili service) in London. That experience and exposure took me to covering the 2010, World Cup in South Africa. This provided me with a great insight into international level football commentary and the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the game including its players, the stadiums, the rules and tactics.I have also been grateful to meet a wide range of people connected to football in the UK, Tanzania, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, France, Kenya etc, and visited almost all of the key football stadiums across United Kingdom, and Europe.
