The Mbeya basketball team yesterday made an impressive show to beat Arusha by 72-56 points in the ongoing Inter-city championships at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The winners were leading by 17-11 points at the end of the opening quarter as their player Humphrey George posted eight points.
At half time Mbeya was still in command with the scoreboard reading 44-29.
The losers took the third quarter by storm but profligate finishing became their nemesis as they persistently trailed by 46-55.
At the end of the match George and Adam Mwanjela accumulated 28 and 19 points while Chelu Mapoli and Rahim Baimu from Arusha scored 15 and 8 points, respectively.
Before yesterday’s match hosts Dar es Salaam started the tournament impressively by knocking out visiting Kampala City by 57-32 points in the opener.
The Dar es Salaam team went on to wrap another victory yesterday after breezing past Mwanza by 67-44 points with Gilbert Batungi scoring 14 points while Ali Mohamed managed 12.
Juma Kisoki and Wilson Masenje scored for Mwanza each with 10 and six points, respectively.
Mwanza ladies too suffered a defeat at the hands of Kampala by 32-60 with winners leading by 43-20 at the half time mark.
Kampala’s scorers were Mirium Hamala (10) and Nabulohi Francis (13). Hadija Kalambo and Agnes Njavike scored 5 and 6 points respectively for the Mwanza team.
On today’s fixture Dar es Salaam meets Mbeya, Kampala plays Mwanza, Arusha locks horns with Kampala while Dar es Salaam women team dates Mombasa.
