Cameroon needed an 89th-minute match winner from Samuel Eto’o to claim all three points against visitors Tanzania.
Eto’o had previously seen his 67th-minute goal cancelled out by Danny Mrwanda in the 78th minute, but the Spain-based striker came through late to give the Indomitable Lions the 2-1 victory.
Cameroon remain at the top of the Group 1 table with ten points, four ahead of Cape Verde Islands, who will face Mauritius on Sunday.
In Group 4 action, Nigeria played up to expectations and grabbed a 2-0 win at home over Equatorial Guinea. Aiyegbeni Yakubu put the hosts ahead with a goal in first-half injury time, and Ikechukwu Uche finished things off with an insurance goal in the 84th minute.
Also in Group 4, South Africa’s struggles continued as they failed to score a goal at home against Sierra Leone and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. The result follows a 1-0 loss by South Africa away to Sierra Leone last weekend and leaves the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ hosts with just one win from four matches.
The results from the two matches mean that Nigeria have clinched the top spot in the group, as their 12 points have them eight points clear with just two matches to play. South Africa and Sierra Leone each have four points, and Equatorial Guinea are at the bottom with three points.
Zambia struggled to break down African Group 11 leaders Swaziland in a qualifier at home in Chililabombwe, despite the fact that the visiting side were reduced to ten men when Sihawu Dlamini was dismissed shortly before half-time. Yet a penalty in the 85th minute, converted by Chrisopher Katongo, was enough to secure the three points.
Zambia now move into joint top spot in Group 11, which now consists of only three teams after Eritrea withdrew from the competition.
