Cecafa unveils Challenge Cup date

The Challenge Cup soccer championship will kick-off in Nairobi on November 28 through December, the general secretary of the Council of East and Central African Football Association (Cecafa), Nicholas Musonye, announced yesterday.

Kenya will be hosting the championship for the first time since 1992.

Musonye declared Kenya as the host nation but still his council is searching for sponsors who would support staging of the regional championship.

Musonye sounded optimistic to secure sponsorship of the event in time with the scheduled kick off date.

All Cecafa member states have been informed of the tournament date.

Uganda hosted the event in January and capitalised on home ground advantage to win a record tenth title since the event was inaugurated in 1973.

Whether all matches would be played in Nairobi or other centres in the likes of Kisumu and Mombasa would be known as the tournament draws closer at the end of next month.

Sudanese Government relieved Cecafa’s heavy burden when it shouldered both the Kagame Cup and under-17 championships held in July and last month respectively.
