BFT picks 18 for Namibia qualifiers

The Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) has picked 18 boxers to prepare for the Olympic Games qualifying bout set to start in Namibia on March 22.

The boxers are expected to start off camp training today at JKT Mgulani in Dar es Salaam under four coaches – Willy Wangula, Nasaro Michael, Benjamin Mwangata and Kameda Anthony.

Coach Anthony named boxers as Fikiri Hassan, Salehe Omary (light fly weight), Issa Athuman, Rajabu Omary (fly), Emillian Patrick, Mohamed Rashid Matumla (bantam), Undule Ramson and Doto Fighter (feather).

Others are Petro Mtagwa, Nasser Mafuru (light), Yusuf Mambo, Hashim Simon (light welter), Joseph Martin, Msafiri Majia (welter).

Leonard Kachichi, Lusajo Mwaipopo (middle).
There are also Geofrey Mbunda (light) and Maximilian Patrick (heavy).

The coach said the boxers would be reduced to nine on February 29. Namibia bout is the second Olympic Games qualifying championship.

Last month, BFT sent three boxers in the Africa Zone Olympic Games qualifiers meet in Algeria.

None of the three qualified. They were Hashim Simon who was beaten on points by Egyptian Ramadhani Elwa in the quarter final stage.

Leonard Machichi was beaten by Kassel Nabil of Algeria while Emillian Patrick lost to Namibian Naidiala Emannuel on points in the preliminary stages.

The Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) recently said that it will only send two disciplines in China – boxing and athletics.

Four athletes have so far qualified for the games. They are Dickson Marwa, Samson Ramadhani, Msenduku Mohamed and Getuli Bayo.

Tanzania has not sent boxing team in the Olympics in the last 12 years.

For the last 20 years I have been working as a football pundit. This experience has provided me with a very useful insight into football and the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the game including its players, the stadiums, the rules and tactics and I have also been grateful to meet a wide range of people connected to football in the UK, Tanzania, Germany .....
