20 teams expected for handball tournament

The Mainland national handball clubs championship will take off early next month, it was said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Tanzania Amateur Handball Association (TAHA) secretary general, Nicholus Mihayo said the event will take place at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The weeklong championship will feature teams, competing for hours in both men and women disciplines.

He said after the completion of the event, the association would select a provisional national team squad, which will take part in various international events.

The events include the East and Central African championship, which traditionally draws participating teams from Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, Seychelles, Zanzibar, Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Magereza Kiwira are the reigning champions in both men and women disciplines.
Some of the teams expected to take part in the event include Ngome, who finished second in last year’s event and third placed JKT.

The list includes Dar es Salaam Stars and JKT Makutupora
“We expect that more than 20 teams would show up for the event, whose winners would walk away with trophies”, said Mihayo.

Four teams, which would finish top in both disciplines, would in April compete against four others from Zanzibar in the Union League.

The Union league is an event taking place rotationally between the Mainland and Zanzibar and is organised jointly by Taha and their isles counterparts, ZAHA.
