Yanga regain top spot

A seventh minute ‘gift’ goal by striker Davies Mwape was enough to silence Kagera Sugar fans at their Kaitaba backyard in Bukoba , Kagera Region as Yanga bounced back on the premiership top spot yesterday.

Kagera Sugar’s defender miscalculated a back pass that was too short for his goalkeeper Anthony Kalusubula as Yanga celebrated an early goal that lasted for the rest of the game.

The victory has elevated Yanga to the hit of the premiership helm with 35 points, one ahead of holders Simba who have a game in hand.

Yanga have slightly shrugged off pressure from resurgent Azam FC who had occupied the second place ahead of yesterday’s game.

The victory is a huge relief for the newly appointed coach Sam Timbe who was in charge for the first time in the Mainland league.

Fresh from CAF Confederations cup exit, crisis-ridden Yanga are back on track to chase the premiership title.

The elevation to the top was buoyed by a slip up of their rivals Simba who dropped two points to Toto Africa who were on the brink of losing their game but secured a lifeline with last-gasp efforts on Wednesday.

Kagera Sugar had dominated the game for most of the time but profligate finish by their strikers caused the havoc to lose before their home fans.

Former Yanga striker Gaudence Mwaikimba came close to score midway into the second half but fluffed much to the amazement of spectators.

The soccer premiership title chase has almost been thrown wide open following upsurge of Azam FC and Yanga who capitalise on Simba’s flop on Wednesday.
