Stars salvage friendly outside FIFA bracket

Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) acting secretary general Sunday Kayuni

After failing to secure a friendly international within FIFA’s globally dates, Stars have eventually set a date with neighbours Harambee Stars in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) acting secretary general Sunday Kayuni said yesterday the decision to play Harambee follows a failure by the federation to get a match that could have been played today.

TFF had their bid to play against any of the East African side collapsed to stay on the sidelines during the FIFA-sanctioned friendly date.

Most of the countries shunned Stars despite lucrative invitation extended to them for undisclosed reasons.

However, Stars deep plunge in rankings possibly stands as one of the major reasons for teams to lose interest on the basis of incompetence.

However, as the match is being played outside the FIFA bracket for international friendlies, Kayuni declined to comment on the repercussions of the outcome in connection with rankings.

Stars are handing deep in triple digit figures with 120th as their worst ever position in the past five three years of competitive football.

Their last international against visiting Morocco in Dar es Salaam shoved them in high depths as they lost by a lone goal before home supporters.

The arrival of Harambee Stars for the friendly would certainly disrupt practice sessions for both the Kilimanjaro Stars and Zanzibar Heroes who are both gearing up for the CECAFA Challenge Cup tourney in ten days time.

Some Stars players from Zanzibar Heroes would be needed to join their Mainland counterparts and play the Kenyans.

Following the friendly match, the friendly derby between Mainland premiership holders Simba and Azam FC that was supposed to be played on the same day though at a different venue has been pushed back.

Kayuni said the match will be played at a date that will be announced later by the football federation.
