Tanzania national golf team continued to plunge deep into the doldrums at the end of the day three of the All Africa team championship that was expected to end in Cairo yesterday.
The team’s cumulative totals summed up to 701 strokes with a combined score of 230 at the end of the third round played on Thursday, to stay at fourth place from the bottom of the 13 nations event.
Contributions were from Adam Abbas 74, Frank Roman 79 and John Leonce 77. The team’s prospects ahead of the final round were not encouraging. Tanzania team’s lynchpin player Ali Mcharo crashed to 83.
Holders South Africa continued to shine at the top of the leader board with cumulative totals of 646 as they set up the pace to retain the title. Kenya were expected to close the seven-point gap to topple the holders in yesterday’s final round.
Tied for third were Zimbabwe and Namibia on 673 cummulative strokes with an uphill task of winning the title.
Boniface Simwa from Kenya moved to the top of individual scores with cumulative totals of 212 having faired 69,72,71 to open a two-point cushion over South African duo of J. Claassen and Yubin Jung.
Libya are at the base of the standings with 735 as Uganda slipped to joint fifth with Botswana on 679 strokes.
Uganda’s star player Vincent Byamukama flopped to post 79 after equaling course record of five under par 67 at the end of the second round to boost his team’s title chances.
Tanzania team are expected to board a return flight tomorrow.
