The National Netball Association (Chaneta) chairperson Anna Bayi

A ten-nation netball tournament will start tomorrow at Dar es Salaam’s National Stadium.

Tanzania and Lesotho  will clash in the opening match of the inaugural championship, which will also attract teams from Namibia, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland.

The National Netball Association (Chaneta) chairperson Anna Bayi said yesterday that preparations  had been completed and the body was ready to host the event.

She said all teams were expected to arrive in the country last evening except Zambia who would arrive by train today. Anna said  that local netballers were in an  upbeat mood to prove to their compatriots that they were a force to reckon with.

The event aims at preparing Tanzania ahead of the World Championship 2011 qualifying matches. Tanzania are in Group `A’ together with Lesotho, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Group `B’ has Malawi, Kenya, Uganda,  Zambia and Swaziland.

The best three teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals.

I have been involved with sports in Tanzania as a Volleyball Coach for many years—and was a Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) leader. I studied sports management at Leipzig University in Germany and understand the science behind sports. That led me to work as a football pundit, with the BBC ( Swahili service) in London. That experience and exposure took me to covering the 2010, World Cup in South Africa. This provided me with a great insight into international level football commentary and the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the game including its players, the stadiums, the rules and tactics.I have also been grateful to meet a wide range of people connected to football in the UK, Tanzania, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, France, Kenya etc, and visited almost all of the key football stadiums across United Kingdom, and Europe.
