Coca-Cola organises marathon to celebrate Olympic Torch Relay

Coca-Cola half marathon will be staged in Dar es Salaam on April 6 as part of the Olympic Torch Relay celebrations. The Senior Franchise Marketing Manager of Coca-Cola Tanzania, Carol Mbaga, said yesterday that the race would be open for everyone.

She said the winner of the race would pocket 1m/- while second and third winners earn 750,000/- and 500,000/- respectively. Fourth finisher will take home 300,000/- and fifth 250,000/-.

Carol also said that there would be a 5km fun run. The half marathon will start at Biafra grounds in Kinondoni to National Stadium in Temeke before ending at the starting point.

The fun race will also start at the same point via Stanbic Bank near Salender Bridge and back to Biafra grounds.

The torch will arrive in the country on April 12 from Buneos Aires, Argentina.

She said the registration for the races was expected to start yesterday.

On his part, the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) Secretary-General Filbert Bayi said the torch race would start on April 13 at Tazara and end at Leaders Club in Kinondoni.

Dar es Salaam is one of the 22 cities which will host the torch.
This will be the first time for the torch to visit Tanzania and the East African region since the inception of the modern Olympic Torch Relay in 1936.

Dar es Salaam is the only African city chosen to host the torch.
The Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay is sponsored by Coca-Cola.
