Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) President Leodegar Tenga has said that the regional body will invite a team from the West African Football Union (Wafu) to next year`s Senior Challenge Cup.
This will be a follow up on the improvement expected to be accrued from inviting two-time former winners Zambia (1984, 1991) to this year`s tournament.
Tenga was speaking at a press conference he held on a working visit to Kampala, Monitor of Uganda reported yesterday.
“We understand the impact of guest teams and that is why we always strive to invite teams like Zambia. We believe stronger teams add value and improve the level of competition,“ said Tenga.
The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president said they are weighing up an invitation for either Togo, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast or Guinea for the next edition.
Tenga featured for Tanzanian giants Young Africans and the Taifa Stars in his playing days and acknowledged the gap left by the departure of Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe, who relocated to play in the Cosafa Cup in 1994.
“All eyes were always on this region as far as football was concerned but we believe that the invitation of these tougher guest teams will do us good,“ he added.
Uganda is the most successful Cecafa nation with nine titles, but the last of those trophies came in 2003.
