CECAFA fires TP Mazembe

CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye

The Council of East and Central African Na Football Associations, CECAFA has expelled TP Mazembe team out of this year’s Kagame cup championship following a severe misconduct.

Mazembe duo of Tresor Mputu and Basisila Lusadisu assaulted Ethiopian referee Girma Zekeria who blew an offside whistle for Mputu who was rushing to score in their final group A match versus hosts APR on Saturday.

CECAFA secretary general Nicholas Musonye said the Dr Congo team has been ordered to leave Kigali within 24 hours. The team has been replaced by Djibouti’s Telecom who were already eliminated. APR were leading by a lone goal by the time the match came to a standstill in the 42nd minute.

This is the second time for TP Mazembe to cause stir in the championship after last year’s furore in Khartoum when they played El-Merreikh.

Musonye said the team has been banned from CECAFA championship on permanent basis and a notification of the brawl has been dispatched to CAF.

Meanwhile, Simba play APR in the quarterfinal match that kicks off today at 18.00 hours. The Tanzania team finished third in group C while Apr topped group A.

I have been involved with sports in Tanzania as a Volleyball Coach for many years—and was a Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) leader. I studied sports management at Leipzig University in Germany and understand the science behind sports. That led me to work as a football pundit, with the BBC ( Swahili service) in London. That experience and exposure took me to covering the 2010, World Cup in South Africa. This provided me with a great insight into international level football commentary and the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the game including its players, the stadiums, the rules and tactics.I have also been grateful to meet a wide range of people connected to football in the UK, Tanzania, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, France, Kenya etc, and visited almost all of the key football stadiums across United Kingdom, and Europe.
