Athletes to camp in February Ready for Beijing

Four athletes who have so far qualified for the Olympic Games will join a residential training camp in February.

Athletics Tanzania (AT) Secretary-General Selemani Nyambui said yesterday that earlier preparations would boost the performance of the runners.

The Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China from August 8 to 24.

Nyambui not did name the coaches who will train the runners.

“We still do not have money for the preparations but I hope we will have got it in February,“ he said.

Athletes who have so far qualified are Dickson Marwa, Samson Ramadhani, Msenduku Mohamed and Getuli Bayo.

He said AT was not comfortable with the number of athletes who had qualified because it was a very minimal representation of Tanzania in the world event.

“Our target is to send 10 athletes or more,“ he said. Nyambui said AT had spotted many good athletes who if trained well, could qualify for the China event.

I have been involved with sports in Tanzania as a Volleyball Coach for many years—and was a Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) leader. I studied sports management at Leipzig University in Germany and understand the science behind sports. That led me to work as a football pundit, with the BBC ( Swahili service) in London. That experience and exposure took me to covering the 2010, World Cup in South Africa. This provided me with a great insight into international level football commentary and the opportunity to carry out extensive research into the game including its players, the stadiums, the rules and tactics.I have also been grateful to meet a wide range of people connected to football in the UK, Tanzania, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, France, Kenya etc, and visited almost all of the key football stadiums across United Kingdom, and Europe.
