Thirteen local runners will compete in the World Cross County Championship in Scotland on March 30. Athletics Tanzania (AT) Assistant Secretary General Julius Msomi said yesterday that the team formed by seven men and six women, would leave for the race on March 27.
“We can not name them now but some of them will be runners who have already qualified for the Olympic Games,“ he said, adding that it would be a good trial for the Olympic team.
Meanwhile, the national athletics team will start residential camp on Monday in Arusha to prepare for the Olympic Games set for Beijing, China from August 8-22.
He said the camp was supposed to start last week but delayed because some of the formalities were yet to be finalized by sponsors, Ngorongoro National Park.
The camp is expected to attract 15 athletes including those who have already qualified for the games.
Those who have qualified are Fabian Joseph, Michael Tluway, Andrea Silvin, Musenduki Mohamed, Samson Ramdhani, Getuli Bayo and Dickson Marwa.
Tanzania will also be represented by boxers in the China event. Six boxers are expected to leave today for Namibia`s African Zone bout to search for the Games standards.
Boxers who leave for Namibia are Hassan Fikiri, Emilian Patrick, Petro Mtagwa, Hashim Simon, Joseph Martin, and Leornard Machichi.None of the boxers have so far qualified.
