Many of the leagues across Europe are on a winter break but there were still a few games being played.

On Wednesday Cameroon’s Alex Song headed home Arsenal’s final goal in a 4-1 thrashing of bottom-of-the-table Portsmouth, whose goal was scored by Algeria’s Nadir Belhadj.
On Monday Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba marked his departure for the Africa Cup of Nations with an equaliser for league leaders Chelsea as they came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1.
Nigeria’s Yakubu set up South Africa’s Steven Pienaar for Everton’s second goal in a 2-0 win at home over Burnley.
El-Hadji Diouf, who is not going to the Nations Cup because Senegal failed to qualify, headed home for Blackburn Rovers as they twice fought back to earn a 2-2 draw with visiting Sunderland.
In Blackburn’s game on Saturday South Africa striker Benni McCarthy had scored his first league goal of the season for Rovers as they drew 1-1 at Wigan.
He also saw a close-range overhead kick brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Chris Kirkland in the second half.
Algeria’s Madjid Bougherra grabbed Rangers’ final goal in a 7-1 thrashing of Dundee United on Wednesday, in what was his last game before going to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria striker Tosin Dosunmu scored the only goal of the game as his side Germinal Beerschot beat Genk 1-0. Genk were reduced to 10 when Cameroon defender Eric Matoukou was sent-off before half-time.
There were three African goal scorers on target for St Truiden as they won 5-2 over visiting Mechelen, who played with nine men for the last 23 minutes.
Senegal’s Ibrahim Sidibe, Moroccan Issame Charai and Zimbabwe’s Cephas Chimedza from the penalty spot helped secure the victory for St Truiden, who themselves were reduced to 10 men in the final minute of the game.
One of the players dismissed for Mechelen was Cameroonian defender Antonio Ghomsi.
In the final games before the winter break on 23 December Kenya striker Dennis Oliech grabbed a brace for Auxerre as they won 2-0 at Marseille.
Ivory Coast striker Gervinho also scored twice for his side Lille as they easily beat hosts Nancy 4-0. Those goals take him to the top of the scoring charts in the French league with 11 strikes this season.
DR Congo defender Andre-Joel Sami was sent-off for Nancy in the 60th minute of that game.
Morocco’s Marouane Chamakh got the first goal for Bordeaux in their 2-1 win at Toulouse.
Benin striker Mickael Pote equalised twice for Nice who came from behind to draw 2-2 with visiting Boulogne.
Not such good news for the Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan who was sent off as early as the 11th minute his Rennes side lost 2-0 at Sochaux.
