Former Young Africans and Taifa Stars custodian Ivo Mapunda, who featured for Ethiopia’s top flight side of St. Georges last season, is back in the Mainland premiership berth with African Lyon as his new team.
Mapunda, who was controversially offloaded by the Ethiopian side, signed a six-month contract with the new premiership arrivals that currently float in the relegation pool.
Mapunda’s signing is a fresh bid for the African Lyon leadership to reinforce the side for premiership survival.
Stuttering Lyon, still limping in the standings table with seven points in eleven appearances, have collected seven points out of two wins and a draw to stay above Toto Africa on goal aggregate.
Lyon’s secretary general Jeshi Zakaria said Mapunda has been signed to reinforce the defensive line-up that has so far conceded 18 goals, just one below those goals conceded by Toto Africa, the bottom placed team.
Mapunda has been cautious in signing for the team as he opted for six-month while reviewing the trend of the team in connection with its premiership survival.
Mapunda would probably sign another contract at the end of the season should Lyon survive top flight berth.
Lyon recently signed former Young African playmaker Charles Boniface to coach the team as they gear up for premiership resurgence.
Besides Mapunda and Mkwasa, Lyon focus on signing more players to build a formidable side.
